Confirmation of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) by immunofluorescence assay (IFA) - IgG
- Infectious mononucleosis
Serum. The minimum volume required is 200 uL. Please note that CSF specimens are not normally processed for serology. Contact lab for more information.
Collect blood in serum separator tubes (SST)
Do not freeze and thaw sera. Specimens may be stored and shipped to NML within 48h of sample collection or must be stored and shipped frozen.
Shipping of specimens shall be done by a TDG certified individual in accordance with TDG regulations. For additional information regarding classification of specimens for the purposes of shipping, consult either Part 2 Appendix 3 of the TDG Regulations or section 3.6.2 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations as applicable.
Immunocompetent patients with equivocal routine serology results.
Completed "Viral STI, Polyoma and Herpesvirus Testing" requisition form including sender lab name, address and telephone number, patient identifier, date of birth or age, sex, specimen reference #, type of specimen, date collected, test requested, reason for testing and any other relevant clinical information.

Serum samples are tested by indirect immunofluorescence for IgG antibodies to EBV VCA using the Merifluor® EBV IgG IFA kit (1). HR1 Burkitt’s lymphocytic cells serve as the substrate (2). Results are reported as titre.
